| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of Papua New Guinea occupies the central field, depicting a Raggiana bird-of-paradise displayed above a traditional kundu drum and crossed spears. The arms are rendered in fine relief against a plain field. The surrounding legend reads 'PAPUA NEW GUINEA 900/1000 FINE GOLD FM 1978', with the fineness, mint mark, and date inscribed along the upper periphery. The overall design is framed by the heptagonal planchet form. |

| Additional information |
Papua New Guinea achieved independence in September 1975, and the new nation moved quickly to establish a coinage identity rooted in its extraordinary endemic fauna. The Queen Alexandra's Birdwing — the world's largest butterfly, found only in a narrow range of Oro Province — was a pointed choice for a prestige gold issue, already legally protected under PNG law at the time of minting.
KM#13 had a low mintage and was produced primarily for the collector market, with virtually no circulation exposure.
