Obverse description The national coat of arms of Papua New Guinea occupies the central field, depicting a Raggiana Bird-of-Paradise displayed above a traditional kundu drum and a spear arranged saltire-wise. The legend 'PAPUA NEW GUINEA' arcs along the upper periphery, with the denomination 'K 100' and the divided date '20 20' inscribed within the field. Additional information

Papua New Guinea adopted the kina as its currency at independence in 1975, replacing the Australian dollar at par. The Bank of Papua New Guinea has issued gold bullion and collector pieces intermittently since, but production volumes remain extremely low — the country lacks domestic gold refining infrastructure capable of producing .999 fine blanks to international minting standards, meaning these coins are typically struck abroad under contract.

KM#87 corresponds to a commemorative bullion issue rather than a circulating denomination. The 100 kina face value is nominal; no 100 kina coin has ever circulated.
