Papua New Guinea's 35th independence anniversary in 2010 gave the Bank of Papua New Guinea reason to issue a commemorative polymer note in a format that had already become something of a house style — the country was an early and enthusiastic adopter of polymer currency, having introduced it in the 1990s well ahead of most of its regional neighbors. Note Printing Australia, the Reserve Bank of Australia's printing subsidiary in Melbourne, produced the note, as it has for much of PNG's polymer output.

P#43 is a commemorative rather than a circulating issue, and collector demand rather than transactional use drove most of the print run into envelopes and folders almost immediately.
