| Obverse description | At center, the small National Emblem of Ukraine (trident) is set within a decorative frame composed of vegetal Eucharistic mosaic ornament. The denomination 100 ГРИВЕНЬ and date 1998 appear within the design, accompanied by the country name УКРАЇНА. Metallic specifications Au 900 and the fine weight 15.55 are inscribed in the field. The overall decorative border reflects the Byzantine artistic tradition associated with the cathedral series. |

| Reverse description | The reverse depicts a detailed rendering of St. Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral as its central motif, with the silhouettes of twelve apostles arranged in the foreground, referencing the celebrated Eucharist mosaic of the original 12th-century structure. The figures are rendered in a stylized manner evoking Byzantine iconographic tradition. A circular legend enclosing the design reads МИХАЙЛІВСЬКИЙ ЗОЛОТОВЕРХИЙ СОБОР XII СТ., identifying the monument and its historical dating. The composition balances architectural grandeur with figural symbolism to commemorate the cathedral's cultural and spiritual significance. |

Issued the year after Ukraine formally separated the hryvnia from its Soviet-era ruble peg and completed its currency stabilization program, this piece was part of the National Bank's early push to establish the gold commemorative series as both a revenue instrument and a vehicle for national historical memory. St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery, founded in the 11th century and demolished by Soviet authorities in 1936, was still under reconstruction in 1998 — the cathedral would not be fully restored until 1999, meaning this coin preceded the building's own completion.
