Suriname's 2000-dated issues arrived during a period of relative monetary stabilization following the catastrophic hyperinflation of the mid-1990s, when the guilder lost the majority of its value in just a few years under a central bank financing arrangement that had effectively become an engine of deficit spending. The 100 Gulden, once an almost meaningless denomination, carried some restored utility by the time this series entered circulation.

Thomas De La Rue's involvement here is worth noting — the London printer had produced Surinamese notes intermittently across several decades, and this series continued that relationship despite the country's proximity to Dutch and regional printing alternatives. The sole listed security feature, a watermark, reflects the modest specification level of the issue.

The guilder itself was abolished in 2004, replaced at 1,000-to-1 by the Surinamese dollar.
