Additional information

Paraguay's independence bicentennial in 2011 marked 200 years from the bloodless coup of May 14–15, 1811, when a small group of creole conspirators effectively removed the Spanish governor Bernardo de Velasco from power without firing a shot — one of the quieter independence events in a continent defined by prolonged military struggle. Nordic gold, an alloy developed by Outokumpu in the 1990s and widely adopted for high-denomination circulation coins across Europe and Latin America, was chosen here for its resistance to corrosion and its distinctive warm color that distinguishes commemorative issues from base metal coinage.
