Additional information

Issued as part of Haiti's extended run of collector-oriented commemoratives during the 1970s, this piece was struck to mark the centennial of France's gift of the Statue of Liberty to the United States — a diplomatic gesture that Haiti, as a Black republic born from revolution, had a distinct historical relationship with, given that the abolition of slavery in the U.S. and Haiti's own founding were ideologically entangled in the broader Atlantic argument over human freedom that the statue was meant to symbolize.

Production was contracted to the Franklin Mint, which handled the majority of Haiti's commemorative output during this decade under licensing arrangements with the Duvalier government.
