| Obverse description | At left, an oval vignette portrays agricultural field workers harvesting crops beneath a thatched roof structure, rendered in a detailed intaglio style. Haiti's 1950 issue came during the presidency of Dumarsais Estimé, whose government had negotiated the end of the U.S.-supervised fiscal control that had constrained Haitian monetary policy since the occupation era. Waterlow & Sons handled the printing, as they did for a considerable portion of Caribbean and Latin American government paper through the mid-century — a relationship built on competitive pricing and the firm's willingness to extend credit to smaller issuing authorities.
P#177 is scarce in higher grades. The gourde's fixed peg to the U.S. dollar at 5:1, held rigidly from 1919 through the 1980s, meant 100-gourde notes represented real purchasing power and saw genuine hard use.
