Albania's 1927 gold coinage was issued to mark the first anniversary of the Kingdom's proclamation under Ahmet Zogu, who had declared himself president in 1925 and was consolidating power through deliberate acts of state symbolism. The Paris Mint struck these pieces, and the "Prova" designation — Italian for "proof" or "trial" — indicates this was a presentation striking rather than a circulation issue, produced in very limited numbers for official distribution and archival purposes.
Zogu would crown himself King Zog I in 1928, just one year after this coin was struck.
