Issued the year before the fiftieth anniversary commemorations of the Liberation of France, this coin reflects the French state's deliberate effort to honor Allied leadership ahead of the 1995 D-Day milestone cycle. Churchill's relationship with de Gaulle was famously fractious — he once remarked he bore his cross of Lorraine with more difficulty than any other burden of the war — yet France chose to commemorate him in silver while de Gaulle had already received his own dedicated issues years prior.
