Piéforts are struck at double the standard planchet thickness — this gold essai takes that further, combining the piedfort format with the trial-piece function required under French monetary agreements that governed Monegasque coinage approvals well into the postwar decades. Monaco was not free to simply issue currency; each type required implicit accommodation with the French Treasury, which controlled the franc zone.
Surviving examples from this 1956 essai series are believed to number in the dozens, not hundreds.
