Issued the year after Pagnol's centenary, this coin belongs to a French commemorative silver series that, through the 1990s, systematically honored figures from French cultural life — writers, composers, painters — under a program that critics at the time dismissed as institutionalized nostalgia. Pagnol died in 1974 having never received the Académie française's full embrace despite his 1946 election, largely because his champions were Provence and the cinema rather than Paris and the novel.
The Monnaie de Paris struck this at its Pessac facility, which had absorbed most French commemorative production by mid-decade.
