| Obverse description | Uniformed bust of the French explorer and naval officer Jules Dumont d'Urville facing three-quarters right, depicted with curly hair and epaulettes, occupying the central field. Behind the effigy, a detailed scene of a sailing vessel navigating among icebergs and rocky outcroppings evokes his Antarctic expeditions. The monogram 'RF' (République Française) appears to the left of the bust. The arc legend 'TERRE ADÉLIE · DUMONT D'URVILLE' curves along the upper rim, while the denomination '100 F' is prominently displayed at the base of the design. Dumont d'Urville completed three major Pacific voyages before his final Antarctic expedition of 1837–1840, during which he claimed the territory he named Adélie Land for France — named after his wife, not a geographical feature. He never received the full recognition he sought during his lifetime. He died in 1842 in the Meudon rail disaster, one of the first major railway accidents in French history, along with his wife and son.
The 1992 issue was part of a broader Monnaie de Paris series commemorating French explorers and navigators.
