Additional information

Dahomey struck this coin to mark the eleventh anniversary of independence from France, achieved on August 1, 1960. The issue was never intended for circulation — produced for the international collector market at a moment when newly independent African states were generating revenue through commemorative programs sold abroad. Dahomey itself had virtually no numismatic infrastructure of its own; the pieces were struck under contract in Europe.

The republic lasted only until 1975, when Mathieu Kérékou's Marxist-Leninist government renamed the country Benin, making the Dahomey issuing authority short-lived by any measure.
