Burundi's 1967 commemorative was issued just one year after the monarchy was abolished in a coup led by Captain Michel Micombero, who overthrew Mwami Ntare V in November 1966 while the king was attending a football match in Kinshasa. Micombero declared a republic and had himself named president. The anniversary issue followed almost immediately as a legitimizing gesture from an internationally unrecognized regime that had seized power by opportunism rather than revolution.
KM#15 was struck in a limited quantity aimed squarely at the collector export market — Burundi had negligible domestic gold coin circulation and the series was frankly a foreign exchange vehicle.
