Obverse description Left-facing draped bust of Marianne wearing a Phrygian cap, her flowing hair rendered in fine detail, engraved by R. Joly whose signature appears in the right field. The circular legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE arcs around the upper periphery, while the issuing authority inscription I·E·O·M and the date 1976 appear in the lower field beneath the effigy.

Reverse description A traditional Kanak conical thatched hut occupies the central field, flanked symmetrically by tall columnar Cook pine trees and palm fronds in an evocative Melanesian landscape composition. The denomination 100 is rendered in large numerals in the lower central field, followed by the franc symbol 'f' at the base. The territorial name NOUVELLE-CALEDONIE arcs around the full periphery, and the word ESSAI, denoting pattern or trial status, appears spaced within the upper legend.
