Obverse description Bare-headed left-facing bust of Marianne, the allegorical personification of the French Republic, rendered in high relief with flowing hair swept back behind the neck in the classical tradition of Raymond Joly's design. The circular legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE arcs around the upper field, while the issuer's abbreviation I·E·O·M and the date 1976 appear in the lower field below the bust. The engraver's signature R. JOLY is inscribed discreetly in the right field. The overall composition is bold and deeply struck, befitting an essai piece intended to demonstrate die quality.
