David Livingstone died in present-day Zambia in 1873, and it was his African servants — Chuma and Susi — who carried his body over a thousand miles to the coast for repatriation to Britain. The Democratic Republic of Congo had no particular connection to Livingstone's expeditions; this is a bullion-adjacent commemorative issued during a period when the country, freshly renamed under Laurent-Kabila, was generating hard currency through foreign collector markets rather than domestic monetary policy.
