Reverse description A finely modelled right-facing draped bust of Marianne, the allegorical embodiment of the French Republic, dominates the field in high relief. She wears a Phrygian cap adorned with an oak branch bearing acorns and leaves, her flowing hair rendered in elegant Art Nouveau style. The engraver's signature J.C. CHAPLAIN appears in the lower right field. The circular legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE arcs around the periphery, and the entire design is framed by a beaded inner border. The portrait reflects Chaplain's celebrated late 19th-century neoclassical medallic style.
