The Republic of the Congo issued this piece as part of a wave of novelty copper coinage that flooded out of central African mints in the late 1980s and early 1990s — a revenue strategy driven less by monetary need than by the foreign collector market. Brazzaville had no particular connection to Spanish colonial shipping.
