Richard Strauss died in 1949, and this piece was issued to mark the 2014 sesquicentennial of his birth. The Ivory Coast has no historical connection to the composer whatsoever — these fractional gold coins are produced under license as bullion collectibles for the European collector market, with the West African issuing authority lending nominal sovereignty to a product designed and distributed entirely abroad.
