The Pharos of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, collapsed in stages following earthquakes in 956, 1303, and 1323 AD — meaning no surviving eyewitness depiction dates from its operational peak. Nearly everything known about its appearance comes from ancient coins of Alexandria and fragmentary written accounts, which disagree substantially on its height estimates, ranging from 100 to 140 meters.
This piece belongs to a wave of small-format gold issues produced for Ivory Coast by the Monnaie de Paris under licensing arrangements that have little connection to Ivorian monetary circulation.
