The Republic of the Congo issued a short run of brass dinosaur coins in 1993 as part of a broader wave of African novelty issues aimed squarely at the thematic collector market — not circulation. Brachiosaurus, one of the heaviest land animals in the fossil record, had received renewed popular attention following significant specimen discoveries in Tanzania and Colorado in the preceding decades.
