The Republic of the Congo — not to be confused with the Democratic Republic of the Congo across the river — is a member of the Central African Economic and Monetary Community, whose monetary authority (the BEAC) issues the standard circulating CFA franc. Coins like this one fall outside that mandate entirely, produced instead for the collector market by private minting contractors under licensing arrangements with the government. At 0.5 grams of .9999 gold, the actual bullion content is negligible; the denomination is nominal.
