Obverse description Central inner disc displays the shield of the Katanga coat of arms, divided diagonally with three saltire crosses (representing the Katanga cross motif) in the lower-right canton, set within a bimetallic surround. The date '1960' appears in the upper field above the shield, the issuer name 'KATANGA' is inscribed in large letters along the lower portion of the inner disc, and the word 'ESSAI' (trial strike) is engraved in the lower exergue of the outer ring.
