Thomas De La Rue printed this series across a sixteen-year span for one of the world's poorest economies, a tenure that stretched through coups, refugee crises, and persistent hyperinflationary pressure that ultimately made the 100-franc denomination increasingly trivial in purchasing power. By the early 1990s, the note was worth fractions of what it had been at first issue.
The watermark-only security specification reflects the cost constraints typical of Burundian note contracts with De La Rue during this period — a single feature, no metallic thread.
