Additional information

Part of Germany's ongoing UNESCO World Heritage Sites gold series, this issue commemorates the Würzburg Residence — the Baroque palace commissioned by the Prince-Bishops of Schönborn beginning in 1720, with Balthasar Neumann as architect. The ceiling fresco by Tiepolo in the Kaisersaal, completed in 1752, is among the largest in the world. The palace survived Allied bombing in March 1945 largely by accident; the city around it was nearly destroyed, but the main structure held.
