Trsat Castle, perched above the Rječina gorge outside Rijeka, has been associated with dragon legends since medieval times — the creature figures prominently in local folklore tied to the site's Frankopan-era history. This coin was issued as part of Croatia's ongoing fine gold bullion and commemorative program following the country's adoption of the euro in January 2023, making it among the earliest domestic gold euro-denominated issues the Croatian National Bank has produced under the new currency regime.
