Additional information

Issued ahead of the 2004 Athens Olympics, this coin commemorates the Panathenaic Stadium — the only major Olympic venue constructed entirely of marble, and the site of the first modern Games in 1896. Greece's decision to return the Olympics to Athens after 108 years carried considerable political weight; the bid had previously failed for the 1996 centennial Games, which were controversially awarded to Atlanta.
