| Additional information |
Part of the Bank of Greece's ongoing Gods of Olympus bullion series, this issue takes Demeter as its subject — the goddess whose myth the ancient Greeks used to explain the agricultural cycle and, by extension, the calendar itself. The Eleusinian Mysteries, the most secretive and widely attended religious rites in the ancient world, were conducted in her honor for nearly two thousand years before being suppressed under Theodosius I in 392 AD.
Mintage for the series has been tightly controlled, with individual issues rarely exceeding a few thousand pieces.
