Belgium's 175th independence anniversary fell in 2005, counting from the 1830 revolution that severed the southern provinces from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. Albert II's reign provided the occasion, but the coin's real subject is the foundational political rupture that created the Belgian state — a largely Catholic, French-speaking uprising against Dutch Protestant rule that succeeded partly because the great powers at the London Conference chose to recognize it rather than risk a wider European war.
