| Reverse description | The reverse depicts a detailed relief adaptation of Georg Raphael Donner's celebrated Providentia Fountain (Donnerbrunnen), originally created for the Neuer Markt in Vienna. The central allegorical figure of Providentia is shown draped and seated atop a raised plinth, flanked by subsidiary allegorical figures representing tributaries of the Danube river; a bearded river god is prominent to the right, while a putto with a fish appears at lower left. The composition faithfully captures the dynamic Baroque sculptural grouping in finely struck relief. The legend 'PROVIDENTIA BRUNNEN' is inscribed along the upper periphery, divided by the central figure. |

The first release in Austria's long-running "Gold of the Alps" — later rebranded as the "Homo Faber" — series, this piece inaugurated what became one of the most ambitious thematic programs in modern European commemorative coinage. Austria's choice of sculpture as the opening subject was deliberate: the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna holds one of the great collections of Renaissance and Baroque small bronzes in existence, and the series was partly conceived as a cultural diplomacy exercise in the years immediately surrounding EU expansion.
The .986 fineness is fractionally above the more common .900 and .9999 standards — a specification the Austrian Mint has used across several prestige series to distinguish them from bullion product lines.
