Obverse description	Purple on multicolour underprint, the face bears a portrait vignette of Dom Afonso V at right, with the Portuguese Coat of Arms at upper centre and the bank seal at left. A red letterpress overprint in two lines applies the new issuing authority name — Banco Nacional de São Tomé e Príncipe — over the original Banco Nacional Ultramarino text. The new date 'S. Tomé, 1 de Junho de 1976' is applied in red at lower centre.

Reverse description	Purple, with a central vignette of a female allegorical figure accompanied by a view of steamships at centre, and the Portuguese Coat of Arms at right. The original Banco Nacional Ultramarino reverse design is retained from P#38, with the new bank name, date, and signature applied in red overprint.
