Issued in advance of Lisbon's Expo 98, the last world's fair of the twentieth century, this coin belongs to a commemorative series that used the exposition's ocean-themed programming as its conceptual frame. Portugal chose the Tagus waterfront as the exposition site — a stretch of industrial wasteland in the Parque das Nações district that the event effectively forced the city to redevelop, permanently reshaping Lisbon's eastern riverbank.
