Reverse description A Portuguese caravel under full lateen sail is depicted sailing to the left, rendered in fine relief against a field decorated with stylized stars. Below the vessel, the dates '1427' and '1452' record the discoveries of the first and last islands of the Azores archipelago — Santa Maria and the islands of Corvo and Flores — by Portuguese and Flemish navigators. The date '1439' featured in the legend references both the first official cartographic record of the archipelago and the authorization granted by Infante Henrique for colonization on 2 July of that year. The commemorative date '1989' marks the 550th anniversary of this authorization. The legend 'ARQUIPÉLAGO DOS AÇORES' arcs along the upper rim, flanked by the date range '1439–1989' and '1427–1452'.
