| Reverse description | Commemorating the 500th anniversary of Bartolomeu Dias's rounding of the Cape of Good Hope in 1488, the reverse features a stylized map of the African continent oriented with the southern tip prominent to the lower left. Two caravels with lateen sails are depicted in an inverted arrangement, evoking the historic voyage. The explorer's name BARTOLOMEU DIAS and the destination CABO DA BOA ESPERANCA arc around the design in the outer legend, along with the engraver's name JORGE VIEIRA and the mint mark INCM. The commemorative dates 1488 and 1988 appear in the lower field. |
