Antero de Quental was one of the central figures of the "Geração de 70," the generation of Portuguese intellectuals who gathered at the Coimbra Question of 1865 and later the Casino Conferences of 1871 — the latter shut down by the government after just five sessions for being deemed subversive. His philosophy grew increasingly pessimistic, shaped by Schopenhauer and his own deteriorating mental health. He shot himself in Ponta Delgada in 1891, the centenary of which this coin directly commemorates.
