Obverse description Central field features the early Portuguese royal shield (escutcheon) in pointed heater form, bearing a cross pattee with five bezants or roundels arranged in cruciform pattern, representing the quinas of the Portuguese coat of arms. Five castle towers — emblems of later Portuguese heraldry — are arranged symmetrically around the shield in the field. The legend REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA arcs along the upper periphery within a beaded border, while the denomination 100 ESC. and the date 1985 appear in the lower right field. The engraver's signature appears at the lower right, and the design is rendered in high-relief proof-style finish.
