The date '19 91' is split and placed in the lower portion of the design, flanking a small Royal Netherlands coat of arms at the base. The overall design is engraved by Willem Vis and features elaborate scrollwork and foliate border decoration in a medallic style. |

Issued to mark the 25th wedding anniversary of Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus, this piece commemorates a union that generated considerable public controversy at the time of the 1966 marriage — Claus von Amsberg had served in the Wehrmacht and Hitler Youth, and his betrothal to the Dutch crown princess provoked riots in Amsterdam during the wedding procession itself. By 1991, that hostility had largely dissolved; Claus had become one of the most personally popular members of the Dutch royal family.
The ECU denomination places this outside the standard Dutch coinage series, issued under European Currency Unit conventions ahead of monetary union.
