Singapore's Lunar series gold issues are struck to .9999 fineness rather than the more common .999, a standard the Monetary Authority adopted to position these coins competitively against Hong Kong and Australian lunar bullion programs. The 2010 Tiger issue falls in the second cycle of the series, the first Tiger having appeared in 1998.
Tigers were extirpated from the Malay Peninsula by the 1950s — the last confirmed wild Singaporean tiger was shot on Choa Chu Kang farm in 1930.
