Obverse description The territorial seal of American Samoa occupies the central field, depicting two traditional Samoan symbols: a crossed fly whisk and a staff (to'oto'o and fue), set above a traditional kava bowl (tanoa) with a decorative geometric border. The date 1988 appears in the lower central field beneath the bowl. The circumferential legend reads AMERICAN SAMOA · 17 APRIL 1900 in the upper arc and SAMOA MUAMUA LE ATUA (Samoa, Let God Be First) in the lower arc.

Reverse description The five interlocking Olympic rings are prominently displayed in the upper portion of the field, below which appears a detailed frontal view of the Jamsil Olympic Stadium (Seoul Olympic Main Stadium), venue of the 1988 Summer Games. The denomination 100 DOLLARS is boldly rendered in the lower field, with 1 OUNCE FINE GOLD inscribed to either side. The circumferential legend XXIV OLYMPIAD SEOUL arcs across the upper border.
