Antigua and Barbuda had been independent for less than a year when this note was issued — the twin-island state gained sovereignty in November 1981, making this among the earliest currency-adjacent collectibles produced under the new national identity. It is not legal tender in the conventional sense; the piece belongs to the wave of silver-foil "banknotes" produced for the collector market in the early 1980s, when several newly independent Caribbean states found philatelic and numismatic exports a useful source of hard currency.
The .999 silver substrate bonded against 23-karat gold foil was a technically demanding production format for its time. Alan D'Estrehan's credit appearing on both faces is worth noting — a single designer controlling the full visual program was unusual for collector issues of this period, which more often divided obverse and reverse between separate studios.
