Issued to mark the centenary of the National University of Singapore, which traces its founding to the Straits Settlements Medical School established in 1905. NUS is the oldest university in Singapore and long predates the nation itself, having operated under colonial administration, Japanese occupation, and two separate sovereign governments before Singapore's independence in 1965.
The .9999 fineness places this among the purest gold issues the MAS produced at that time — finer than the standard .900 used in earlier Singapore bullion coinage.
