Hutt River Province declared secession from Western Australia in 1970 under Leonard Casley, who styled himself Prince Leonard I. The micronation's legal standing was never recognized by the Australian government, but its coins — issued with full numismatic intent — found a ready collector market. The Abner Doubleday attribution here is curious: Doubleday is popularly credited with inventing baseball, a claim largely debunked by historians, which makes his appearance on a coin from an unrecognized sovereign entity a fitting pairing of disputed myths.
