| Additional information |
The Super Pit — formally the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines open-cut operation — has been one of Australia's most productive gold sources since the Kalgoorlie rush of the 1890s, when Irishman Paddy Hannan's 1893 find triggered a western migration that rivaled the Victorian rushes of four decades earlier. At roughly 3.5 kilometers long and 570 meters deep, it has produced over 20 million ounces since open-cut operations began in 1989, displacing the older underground networks of the Golden Mile.
This is among the last Perth Mint issues bearing Elizabeth II's effigy before her death in September 2022 necessitated the transition to Charles III portraits across the Commonwealth coinage program.
