Liberia has issued commemorative silver pieces under its own authority since the 1970s, functioning almost entirely as an export product for the collector market rather than any domestic monetary purpose. Cortés completed his conquest of Tenochtitlán in 1521, after which the Spanish Crown's Mexican silver mines would go on to produce roughly a third of the world's silver supply for two centuries.
