| Reverse description | The heraldic arms of the University of the West Indies occupy the central field, featuring a quartered shield with a lion passant in the upper division and an open book in the lower division, supported by elaborate foliate mantling to either side. A pelican, the university's symbolic crest, stands atop the shield as a crest. A scroll below the shield bears the university motto 'ORIENS EX OCCIDENTE LUX'. The commemorative legend '50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES' arcs around the upper and lateral border, with the founding and anniversary dates '1948 – 1998' inscribed in the lower exergue. |

| Additional information |
The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank issued this piece to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the University of the West Indies, chartered in 1948 as a college of the University of London before achieving full autonomous university status in 1962. The ECCB's commemorative gold program of the late 1990s was modest in scope and mintage, making individual issues from the series genuinely difficult to locate today.
