Additional information

Rudolf II, Holy Roman Emperor, relocated his court to Prague in the 1580s and filled it with alchemists, astrologers, and occultists on the imperial payroll. Edward Kelley was among the most prominent — an Englishman who arrived with John Dee claiming the ability to communicate with angels and transmute base metals into gold. Rudolf granted Kelley a noble title and eventually imprisoned him when the promised transmutations failed to materialize. Kelley died around 1597, reportedly during an escape attempt from Hněvín Castle.

Niue's gold issues in this series use the country's sovereign status under free association with New Zealand to issue legal tender struck by foreign private mints — a familiar arrangement in the modern commemorative market. The 62.2g weight places this squarely in the two-troy-ounce format favored for high-denomination collector issues.
