Canada's 1976 Montreal Olympics became one of the most financially catastrophic Games in modern history, leaving the city of Montreal carrying debt that wasn't fully retired until 2006 — thirty years after the closing ceremony. The Royal Canadian Mint issued this coin as part of a broader Olympic fundraising program, with gold and silver issues sold directly to collectors at a premium to help offset ballooning construction costs for the Olympic facilities.
The 22-karat composition was a deliberate commercial choice, hardened slightly for durability as a collectible rather than struck to the .999 fineness of bullion issues.
