Reverse description The reverse features a magnificently detailed depiction of a Ho-oh (Japanese phoenix), shown in dynamic posture with wings fully spread, rendered in high relief against a polished field. Behind the bird, a large colored disc representing the rising sun is applied in deep red enamel, while two stylized clouds appear at the upper right in the field. Flanking the phoenix at lower left and right are colored bonsai pine trees with green enamel foliage, and decorative Japanese-style ground plants fill the lower field. The curved legend '81st Birthday Celebration of the Emperor' arcs along the upper rim, with the fineness mark '.9999' positioned at the lower right.

Additional information

Issued to mark the 81st birthday of Emperor Akihito in 2014, this Cook Islands gold piece belongs to a category of commemorative issues produced under licensing arrangements common to small Pacific nations — Cook Islands, Niue, Palau — whose mint programs are operated almost entirely by private European minting houses, chiefly the Münze Österreich and B.H. Mayer's Kunstprägeanstalt. The actual connection to Cook Islands sovereignty is nominal; the coins are legal tender by statute but were never intended for domestic circulation.

At 15.55 g of .9999 fine gold, the specification matches a standard half-troy-ounce bullion blank.
